Annie Lennox and Trevor Horn Among the Queen's New Year's Honorees
Twice each year Queen Elizabeth II releases a list of the Queen's Honours. These include knighthoods as well as members of the Order of the British Empire. This year singer Annie Lennox (at right) and producer Trevor Horn are among those being honoured. Annie Lennox receives her accolade not for music but for her philanthropic contributions in supporting Oxfam in the fight against AIDS in Africa. Trevor Horn is being recognized for his service to the music industry.Annie Lennox has been recognized as one of the world's top pop singers since her first major success as one half of Eurythmics in the 1980s. Combining her work with Eurythmics and solo efforts, she has sold over 80 million records and is one of the most successful female recording artists of all time. She has been highly visible in the last decade in her work to bring about awareness of the toll taken by the AIDS epidemic in Africa.
Trevor Horn's first major success in the music industry was as part of Buggles who released the seminal new wave pop hit "Video Killed the Radio Star" in 1979. It is also remembered as the first video broadcast by MTV. Trevor Horn then had success as a member of Art of Noise and the band Yes when they released their only #1 single "Owner Of a Lonely Heart" in 1983. Later Trevor Horn became one of the most successful pop music producers in the business through work with ABC, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Pet Shop Boys, Seal, and many others. He won a Record of the Year Grammy Award in 1995 for producing Seal's "Kiss From a Rose."
